P as in
Pelvis
The
pelvis,
so called from its resemblance to a basin, is a ring of bones in the lower trunk of the
body, which is bounded by the tail bone and the hip bones. The pelvis protects abdominal organs such as the
bladder, rectum and, in women, the uterus.
The pelvis
is made up of three hip bones connected by the symphysis -- the place where two
bones are closely joined forming an immovable joint (as between the pubic bones
in the center of the pelvis). It
is significant during childbirth as it is capable of stretching to permit
delivery.
Attached to the pelvis
are muscles of the abdominal wall, the buttocks, the lower back, and the
insides and backs of the thighs.
Pelvic floor muscle
training exercises can help strengthen the muscles under the uterus, bladder,
and bowel (large intestine). They can
help both men and women all ages.
Everybody can benefit and you do not have to have any problems to start.
Very often pelvic movements are used in dances such as Salsa
and Meringue or by singers like the legendary Elvis. Elvis the Pelvis !
NIMBLE has several
exercises to learn to become more flexible in this region, to tuck your pelvis
in and under, especially when you stand and walk the correct way.
