ORGAN -- an instrument
consisting of a number of pipes that sound tones when supplied with air and a
keyboard that operates a mechanism controlling the flow of air to the pipes.
In biology,
an organ
is a collection of tissues joined in a structural unit to serve a common
function.
There are
eleven major organ
systems found in mammals. Here are a few
examples.
Cardiovascular
system: pumping and channeling blood to
and from the body and lungs with heart, blood and blood vessels.
Digestive
system: digestion and processing food
with salivary glands, esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas,
intestines, colon, rectum and anus.
Muscular
system: movement with muscles.
Nervous
system: collecting, transferring and
processing information with brain, spinal cord and nerves.
Skeletal
system: structural support and
protection with bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons.
Respiratory
system: the organs used for breathing -- the
pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs and diaphragm.
Organ donation takes
healthy organs
and tissues from one person for transplantation into another. Experts say that the organs from one donor can save or
help as many as 50 people. Organs
you can donate include:
•
Internal organs -- kidneys, heart, liver, pancreas,
intestines, lungs
•
Skin
•
Bone and bone marrow
•
Cornea
Most organ
and tissue donations occur after the donor has died, but some organs
and tissues can be donated while the donor is alive.
Your inner organs
are protected by the muscles of your abdomen which wrap around your midsection
like wrapping tape around a parcel going for a long trip. For them to work properly, they need to stay
in their designated position, so again, your posture in sitting, standing, or on the floor is important.
Use NIMBLE to achieve this goal!
