E like Ear

E as in Ear

The ear is the organ that detects sound.  It not only receives sound, but also aids in balance and body position.

Yes, the ear is the sound organ, but the actual hearing happens in the brain and in the central nervous system.  It consists of an outer ear, where the sounds are collected, the only part that we can see when we look at a person or whisper in her ear.  The middle ear changes the sound into vibrations and consists of tiny, delicate bones.  It has some of the smallest bones in our body.  The inner ear is where the nerve signals begin.

We have four muscles to move our ears but they are very weak, so most of us aren’t able to wiggle our ears anymore, although this was different a long time ago.  Mammals, for example, like horses and dogs, use their ears to communicate and to express feelings so they have much stronger muscles. Humans, on the other hand, as we know, use facial expressions and body language.

Cosmetic ear surgery known as otoplasty can improve the look of our ears, especially if they stick out too much.  Some mothers put a knit hat or bonnet on their babies to encourage their ears to stay flat against their head.

We love to embellish our ears with different kinds of earrings and it is the part of our body where piercing is most widely done and accepted.

For years, another kind of piercing has been used – acupuncture -- to relief pain, joint stiffness and more, by inserting tiny needles around the ear.

We’re still able to open and close our ears.  Think about when you’re follow an interesting conversation or, on the other hand, when you’re listening to a boring lecture.  What do you do?  You block out the sound, close your ears, and go on with your day dreams!  If not, you’ll have to use ear plugs like you would when you have a snoring partner next to you in bed!

One thing that’s of great importance to NIMBLE is that the muscles around your ears play a significant role in lifting your whole face.  They help to “iron out” both your small and large wrinkles!

Learn how to do it!
