A like appendix

A as in appendix

Vermiform appendix, or simply "appendix", a part of the human digestive system.

A  Finnish punk rock group.

In anatomy, the appendix is a blind-ended tube connected to the cecum; a pouch-like structure of the colon. The appendix is located near the junction of the small intestine and the large intestine.

The human appendix has been proposed to be a structure that has lost all or most of its original function through the process of evolution.
Recently improved understanding of gut immunity has merged with current thinking in biological and medical science, pointing to an apparent function of the appendix as a safe-house for symbiotic gut microbes, preserving the flora during times of gastrointestinal infection in societies without modern medicine.  This function is potentially a selective force for the evolution and maintenance of the appendix.

Appendicitis  is a condition characterized by inflammation of the appendix.  Pain often begins in the center of the abdomen, corresponding to the appendix's development as part of the embryonic midgut.
Appendicitis is a medical emergency that requires prompt surgery to remove the appendix.  Left untreated, an inflamed appendix will eventually burst, or perforate, spilling infectious materials into the abdominal cavity. This can lead to peritonitis, a serious inflammation of the abdominal cavity's lining (the peritoneum) that can be fatal unless it is treated quickly with strong antibiotics.

This is another body part we can live without.  There are more than a few parts of the body which are helpful, but not essential to life.  Gallbladders, for instance, store bile from the liver, but you can get along without them and they are often removed if stones become a problem.

Our body is still a mystery in a lot of ways, so be happy when you can keep it like you got it!
